The Rockford Files was a drama that aired on NBC from 1974 to 1980. The series focused on a wrongly convicted man who served time in prison. After his release he began to work as a private investigator. Unlike other PIs on TV at the time, Rockford did not like getting into trouble. He would often talk his way out of a fight, almost never carry a gun, and wore off the rack clothes and was anything but smooth.
The show was successful and pulled in good ratings and even inspired a spinoff, Richie Brockelman, Private Eye. But that show was canceled after five episodes. Decades later, the show is still popular among fans.
