
Robert Wise both directed and produced the 1965 musical film The Sound of Music. The movie is based on the Broadway musical of the same name by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The musical in turn was based on the book by Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.
The Sound of Music was filmed on location in Austria and Germany. The musical won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and is one of the most popular musicals ever produced. The movie received a total of ten Academy Award nominations and won for Best Director, Best Sound, Best Adapted Score, and Best Editing.
Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummber head the cast as Maria von Trapp and Captain Baron von Trapp. The rest of the cast includes, Peggy Wood, Charmian Carr, Richard Haydn, Nicholas Hammond, Heather Menzies, Duane Chase, Angela Cartwright, Debbie Turner, Kym Karath, and Eleanor Parker.
