Top Chef is a competitive reality cooking program on Bravo that premiered in 2006. A group of chefs from across the United States compete against each other for the chance to win the title or "Top Chef," $100,00, kitchen appliances, a culinary tour of the French Alps and a feature in Food & Wine Magazine.
The chefs must complete two challenges each episode. The first one is the Quickfire Challenge in which the contestants must prepare a specific dish in a short amount of time. The winner of the challenge may win immunity from elimination or other prizes. The second challenge is the Elimination Challenge in which the chefs are asked to create a whole meal usually for a catered event. The food is critiqued by the show's judges: Padma Lakshmi, Chef Tom Colicchio and new judge Toby Young.
Top Chef is produced by the same company that created Project Runway.
