Steven Soderbergh directed the crime drama Traffic which was released on December 27, 2000 by USA Films. Edward Zwick, Marshall Herskovitz and Laura Bickford produced the film and Stephen Gagnon wrote it. An adaptation of a British television series called Traffik, the movie was an extensive undertaking, filmed in 110 locations. It cost $46 million and grossed $207 million. The movie had an extensive line-up of stars, including Michael Douglas, Benicio del Toro,
Don Cheadle, Dennis Quaid and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The picture won four Oscars. Benicio del Toro was one of only five actors in the Academy's history to win an Oscar for a part spoken primarily in another language, in his case Spanish. Del Toro also won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. Steven Soderbergh won a Best Director Oscar and the picture was nominated for Best Picture. The cast also won a Screen Actor's Guild Award for Best Ensemble Cast. Stephen Gagnon won a Best Writer Oscar as well as a Golden Globe and Screen Actor's Guild award.
