Ugly Betty is a comedy-drama on ABC that is based on a Colombian telenovela (Betty la Fea)that was adapted for American television and premiered on on 2006 and produced by Selma Hayek and Silvio Horta.
The show is about Betty Suarez, a socially awkward, unglamorous and good-hearted young woman and her life and career at one of the most fashionable magazine in New York. She must battle the beauty obsessed world of fashion at Mode magazine as the assistant of Daniel Mead, son of the publishing giant family. Betty is often the target of ridicule and pranks from her co-workers, mainly Marc St. James and Amanda Tanen because of her alternative style.
The show is one of the very few shows on network TV to show a Latin character as the lead. It is also the only network show to focus on Mexican-American family.
