The box-office smash hit National Lampoons Vacation was released on July 29th, 1983. The budget for the film was a slim $15 million dollars, but grossed over $61 million dollars in the United States alone. The story centers around the Griswold family from Chicago, and their cross-country trek to visit Walley World (modeled after Disney World) in California. Chevy Chase stars in the film, and co-stars Beverly D'Angelo, Dana Barron, Randy Quaid, and a very young Anthony Michael Hall. The film was written by John Hughes, who wrote the short story 'Vacation' which was the inspiration for this movie. John based the story on his own trip as a child to Disney World.
