The Noxubee Wildlife Refuge is a snowy wonderland

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Feb 10, 2011, 1:48 pm
The overnight snow really worked it’s magic in the Noxubee Refuge. There are some amazing views here today. I haven’t seen anything like this in Mississippi before. I’m pretending my plane crashed in Alaska and I’m hiking my way back to civilization.

Winter 2011 has been a true test for my Morso Squirrel

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Feb 4, 2011, 12:32 pm
I’ve had my Morso 1410 or Squirrel for three years now and she has never had as hard a job as the Winter of 2011.  Lows in my area usually range from 28-35 degrees Fahrenheit, Winter precipitation is always just a cold rain.  This year we have had several two or three day periods where the mercu...

My Morso Squirrel is ready to battle the oncoming ice storm

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Feb 3, 2011, 7:59 pm
North Mississippi is in the midst of a huge ice storm. I can already see my power line starting to droop, the loss of power seems a certainty. The only thing standing between me and a frosty demise is my Morso 1410 and a cord of well seasoned oak. I can’t convey how satisfying it is to have a w...

Dick Proenneke Speaks

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Jun 16, 2008, 4:49 pm
Any time I think about Dick Proenneke I associate him with the voice of the narrator from Alone in the Wilderness.  The folksy and plain stated narration blended with the beautiful images of Alaska and the skillful self-sufficiency of Dick Proenneke make Alone in the Wilderness worthy of repeated v...

The Beaver Dam Trail in the Noxubee Wildlife Refuge

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Jun 15, 2008, 4:38 pm
I hiked the Beaver Dam Trail in the Noxubee refuge today and I really enjoyed it.  The refuge web site says the trail is a little over 2 miles long.  I’d call it 2.5 miles.  This is a down and back trail, but the return trip didn’t disappoint. The Beaver Dam Trail follows the flow of Oktoc C...

Aerial photos of the Noxubee Wildlife Refuge

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Jun 13, 2008, 6:36 pm
There are some great bird’s eye view aerial photos of the Noxubee Refuge on Microsoft Virtual Earth. The bird’s eye view doesn’t cover the entire refuge, but the area that is covered can be zoomed in incredibly close. This is a great tools for scouting areas to explore.  You can even pushpi...

Trail of the Big Trees in the Noxubee Wildlife Refuge

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Jun 13, 2008, 4:33 pm
I took a short hike down the Trail of the Big Trees in the Noxubee Refuge the other day.  The refuge web site claims the the trail is 4 miles; 2 miles out 2 miles back.  It seemed alot shorter.  Although, to be honest, I’m not sure I made it to the end. There is supposed to be a sign at the en...

Blackberry picking in the Noxubee Wildlife Refuge

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Jun 11, 2008, 6:29 pm
June in Mississippi is when the temps start hitting the high 90′s, a trip to the mailbox means sweating through your shirt, and air conditioners in cars and homes break down in a chorus that is the sweetest music to the eager ear of every repair man. Thankfully, June in Mississippi also means the...

The Dick Proenneke cabin is now a museum in Alaska's Lake Clark National Park

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Jun 11, 2008, 4:27 pm
It’s good to see the National Park Service is going to preserve Dick Proenneke’s cabin as a museum.  I hope to visit the site myself some day. The beauty and remoteness of the Lake Clark National Park definitely puts it in my top 5 places to disappear to. A month or two trying to survive in t...

Nature reclaiming the front porch – a year later

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Jun 10, 2008, 4:24 pm
I posted this picture last week of nature taking over an empty farm homestead; a situation repeated on many old farms in the rural deep south.  Well, here is a picture of the same farm house a year later. It looks like the vines have opened the screen door and are making their way inside.

The life of Richard "Dick" Proenneke is my new inspiration

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Jun 10, 2008, 4:22 pm
Do you know the story of Richard “Dick” Proenneke?  At age 52 Dick left the civilization of the lower 48 behind and headed into the wilds of Alaska. He built a cabin by himself using only hand tools, and hunted and gathered for the majority of his food.  He thrived in the complete isolation o...

Large Mouth Bass from my kayak

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Jun 8, 2008, 4:20 pm
I took my fishing kayak to a secret spot this afternoon and caught a few good sized large mouth bass.  These were the biggest fish I’ve caught since I got my Native Manta Ray 12, and it was good to break it in properly. The Manta Ray is so maneuverable I was able to put every cast just where I w...

Kayaking Bluff Lake at the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge

Bluff Lake at the Noxubee Refuge is perfect for kayak exploration.  The east side of the lake is bordered by a cypress forest.  You could spend the whole day snaking your way through the cypress trees.  A standard boat draws to much water to access alot of these secret coves. I saw several huge ...

Adding a Morso wood stove to my cabin

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Dec 31, 1969, 7:00 pm
I recently decided my little cabin in the woods needed some help in the heating department.  Self sufficiency and reliability have become my mantra lately, so I needed a dependable heat source that my own two hands could supply the fuel for.  Wood heat seemed perfect. My cabin is situated in the...

Learn to throw a casting net and never pay for bait again

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Dec 31, 1969, 7:00 pm
When I was a kid all I ever fished with was live bait.  On the way to the fishing hole Dad would take us by the bait shop to pick up whatever our target fish was fond of. We would fill our bucket with minnows for White Perch.  A cardboard cylinder of chirping crickets guaranteed a stringer full o...

The tides and moon phases really effect the fishing in Grand Isle, Louisiana

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Dec 31, 1969, 7:00 pm
I devoted a sizeable chunk of July to chasing the Speckled Trout, Redfish, and Blue Crabs of Grand Isle, Louisiana.  My eagerness to fill my freezer with fish fillets and lump crab meat would have been better served by learning how the tides and moon phases effect fishing in coastal areas. I’ve ...

The tomato grower's arch enemy is the Tomato Hornworm

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Dec 31, 1969, 7:00 pm
These nasty buggers have launched their attack on my tomato plants, and I’m showing no mercy. The Tomato Hornworm is laid by the Hawk Moths I see fluttering around my tomatoes in late May.  It starts out the size of a grain of rice and matures over the span of a month into this leaf chomping mon...

Vacuum pack your homegrown produce and make fewer trips to the grocery

Braddock Jones posted an article on - Dec 31, 1969, 7:00 pm
I am very happy with the way my hay bale garden is producing.  Eliminating trips to the grocery store, at least for fruit and vegetables, is a major step on the road to self-sufficiency. Once ripe, these fruits of my labor aren’t going to last long unless I find a way to preserve them for later...
