The Muppets Are Back!

Diane Graebner posted an article on - Nov 30, 2009, 1:41 pm
Although they never really went away completely, it seems as if the Muppets as we old-timers knew them are back, and in full force! When the Walt Disney Company acquired the Muppet properties in 2004, the Muppets had just about faded into obscurity. They were seen around on the occasional TV speci...

Getting There (Slowly)

Diane Graebner posted an article on - Nov 23, 2009, 2:49 pm
As you can see, I made some progress over the weekend! We’re beginning to get to the “adding features” phase of development. I just need to complete the body, arms, and hands, and then I’ll move on to adding facial features. I need to carve a nose and ears, and attach hair. I’m moving a b...

My Thoughts About the Sesame Street Season Premiere

Diane Graebner posted an article on - Nov 11, 2009, 10:24 am
With the 40th Anniversary of Sesame Street now behind us, and this season underway, I wanted to share my thoughts about yesterday’s season premiere. Let me preface my thoughts by saying this: It’s been a long time since I watched Sesame Street from start to finish. I’ve watched segments, seen ...

And Many Happy Returns!

Diane Graebner posted an article on - Nov 10, 2009, 11:45 am
It was 40 years ago today that a TV show was introduced to viewing audiences, although that show was more than three years in the making. It was an ambitious project. It had never been done. Television producers worked with educators and researchers to create this show. Story meetings gave way to cu...

My Father worked for an agency in Ohio that benefited from the United Way. A cast of Up with People was performing in our town, benefiting UW, so my Father was asked to serve as a host family for a student. I was at a point in my life where I didn't know what I wanted to do. I had graduated college with a degree in Elementary Education but didn't want to teach. I was assistant manager of a bookstore, but couldn't see myself doing that my whole life. UWP seemed interesting, so I arranged with the girl we were hosting to spend the day with the cast. I remember the group of students from Germany very clearly. They were given permission to skip out of rehearsals that day so they could go across the street from the theatre to a small cafe that was showing the news on TV. The cheers could be heard all over town as the wall came down. I interviewed with UWP after the show that night. The excitement was still palpable after such an international event. I was accepted into the cast and traveled...

in 1991. Our show featured songs about walls coming down and "Coming Home" to something. I believe my feelings about both events - the wall coming down and my experiences with UWP - are intertwined.

Because He Loves to Count Things!

Diane Graebner posted an article on - Nov 9, 2009, 12:52 pm
Count von Count, or just The Count for brevity’s sake, loves to count things! Just ask any Sesame Street viewer to count to 10 and see if you don’t get the numbers in a strangely Draculinean (is that a word?) accent, punctuated with a clap of thunder! The Count was introduced in the early 70’...

Why Elmo Isn't Evil

Diane Graebner posted an article on - Nov 9, 2009, 10:28 am
There are those that believe that Sesame Street “jumped the shark” when Elmo “took over.” There are those that believe that the show has lost its edge, lost what made it special, now that Elmo is a central character. Change of any kind is difficult to deal with, and Elmo is change. First of...

Mr. Snuffleupagus is REAL!

Diane Graebner posted an article on - Nov 9, 2009, 7:29 am
I always worried about how Big Bird felt when the adults on Sesame Street told him that Mr. Snuffleupagus, or Snuffy to his friends, was not real. The show had created a running gag from the time Snuffy was introduced in 1971 – Snuffy would cause Big Bird to be late for something because he was wa...

Happy Birthday Big Bird! Considering the many years of research that went into creating the show, it's no wonder that it's as much a part of childhood today as it was when it first aired in 1969.

Farewell, Mr. Hooper

Diane Graebner posted an article on - Nov 6, 2009, 11:15 am
Remember that I grew up watching Sesame Street. I watched it from about the time it first aired in 1969 until well through High School (although in later years I only watched it occasionally and as a fan of the Muppets or as someone interested in becoming a teacher) and into college. One of my fav...

About Me

Diane began performing as a puppeteer when she was only six years old. Her first marionette, Clippo the Clown, a gift from her Grandmother, accompanied Diane to school every year through college. As an adult, Diane began making and performing hand puppets. She writes the shows, fabricates the puppets and props, performs all of the puppetry, and even serves as her own lighting and sound engineer!
