I held my first fundraising dinner for my trip to Ecuador on Wednesday with much success! We only invited about 8 people but everyone was very generous and I raised $250 after one evening! Earlier this week a large group of ducks landed in a Syncrude tailings pond in Northern Alberta. Does this story sound familiar? Well it should... the exact same thing happened in 2008. The GELA (Greater Edmonton Library Association) Prison Committee works with the Edmonton Institution for Women in their library.
All the proceeds from this book sale on this Saturday and Sunday will go towards the Edmonton Institution for Women.

This evening was the opening of the Latitude 53 art show called Every Victim Matters. This art show featured the art work of over 60 Edmonton area youth (aged 12-24). The works of art addressed different topics such as poverty, violence and peer pressure to go with National Victims Awareness Week.

Well apparently premier Ed Stelmach hasn't seen any pictures of the approximately 1, 600 ducks that died after landing in a Syncrude tailings pond in northern Alberta. Last Friday I spent my morning at Boyle Street Community Services in downtown Edmonton. I volunteered there in the Youth Department for my community service hours that I have to do for school. It was a very interesting and eye-opening experience and I will definitely volunteer there again.
