That was just a very lazy, soft finale. The ending was very unabrasive and really had nothing to do with the rest of the show. They concluded the characters lives, but left most of the business on the island unresolved.
That crazy stuff that happened on the island? Oh, that was real and there was no reason for it. The characters just went there and a bunch of crazy, unexplained stuff happened. No biggie. Oh, and it was the best years of their lives, so years later after they all eventually died (some living almost eternally on the island), they got back together for one last after-party before going to the afterlife or whatever.
You could have ended any show with this finale (Seinfeld, Cheers, M*A*S*H, Twin Peaks, Roseanne, etc), and people would have thought it was nice, but not an ending. There was just no conclusion. “The characters eventually dieing sometime after the show ended and then going to heaven” is no ending at all. It’s just lazy.

In conclusion, viewers will like the finale because they like the characters and the relationships, but ABC/the show’s creators played this one way too safe.
