First shingle sighting

Stephanie B. posted an article on - Sep 27, 2011, 1:02 am
I had a little time over the weekend to start working on the shingles for the back wall. It’s the type of project that I visualize as being very quick and easy, but of course, it’s not. On every row I was reminded of every non-plumb surface on our house and had to deal with the almost-but-not-qu...

Small railing progress

Stephanie B. posted an article on - Sep 19, 2011, 1:08 am
Although this weekend was a bit too rainy to get deep into the railing and post replacement, I did take time this afternoon to fabricate the new railings. The existing porch and step railings appear to have been homemade from 2x4s, so I ripped and sanded these to match. I also improved the design a ...

The Story of a Re-fi (or how the bank changed our plans)

Stephanie B. posted an article on - Sep 19, 2011, 12:53 am
I hadn’t yet managed to take my obligatory week “off” to work on the house, so I scheduled it for last week. On the Wednesday prior, I got a call from our mortgage broker saying that the underwriter at the bank was freaking out about our exposed plywood siding on the kitchen. They wouldn’t c...

Fixing the railings

Stephanie B. posted an article on - Sep 18, 2011, 1:44 am
When we moved into our house, the front railings looked this: A little mildew, but not too bad... After about one year, we found that they had rotted out. Like so many things done by our previous owner, I’m sure it was fixed up with a nice coat of paint just before we bought the house. For a lon...

Plants vs Mommies

Sorry, I’m tired and that’s the best I could come up with! And technically, it was only one mommy. This is a long overdue picture that shows all the plants that Stephanie got into the yard. It looks SO much better than before. Now that we have no more grass, all the sprinklers were disconnected...

The best part of homeownership

Stephanie B. posted an article on - Jul 19, 2011, 2:25 am
I never get tired of fixing and replacing broken things. At least that’s what I keep telling myself. A few nights ago, I noticed a small puddle under the sink. A check with a flashlight revealed that the water was leaking out the exit hole for the power cord. Hmmm…not good! I went to Home Dep...

Goodbye, old chimney

Stephanie B. posted an article on - Jul 13, 2011, 1:31 pm
6 1/2 years ago we demolished the chimney that used to run through our pantry closet. It was no longer being used, as we had switched to a high efficiency furnace and a tankless water heater, both of which vented out the side of the house. The bricks sat in a pile in the side yard for six months, un...

Aerial yard view

Stephanie B. posted an article on - May 26, 2011, 12:36 am
Here’s a composite view of the yard made from shots taken along the edge of the roof. It does a great job of showing the shape of the path. Some of the curves look sharper than they really are, which is just an artifact of the photo merge. We do want to slightly change the way the path interfaces ...

Yard, day 4

Here’s what the yard looked like on Saturday, after the 4th day of work. While there are lots of punch list items yet to be completed, the overall look is infinitely better than what we had going on before the project. This will look really cool when we have some plants! Ready for action

After Day 3 on the Yard

Here’s where things stand after the third day of work. Unfortunately, I didn’t get quite enough concrete for the step, and they ran out while filling my form. So we grabbed some more, and I finished it up that night. Although it’s only one step, it provides a nice delineation between the area ...

Ready for the landscapers

Because of the massive volume of dirt that needed to come out and the even larger amount of gravel to be carried up, we made the decision to hire out the “scaping” part of the project. We will be handling the plants and mulching, but there was no way we wanted to carry all the materials up and d...

A few months back we asked my dad (a landscape architect) to help us out with a plan for our side yard. He put together the awesome plan below, which we are now attempting to construct. We’ve made a few changes along the way as we started to lay things out, particularly regarding the steps. While...
