About Me
stills in transit is a photoblog project consisting entirely of photographs taken inside the new york city subway stations. all the images are taken at various hours while i wait for the train and are categorized by the stations where the photos are taken. for me, this project is about seeking and seeing possibilities and potentials for beauty in everyday places.
the nyc subway system comprises 468 stations, the largest number of public transit subway stations in the world, and 5,225,675 people utilized the nyc subway system on an average weekday last year (nyc mta report 2008). the nyc subway stations serve as integral places for millions of riders whose commutes take place like daily rituals.
in their hours of chaotic glory, the station pulsate with commuters whose restlessness, frustration, and exasperation almost feel palpable. the idea for stills in transit was inspired during these hours in april 2009 when i decided to see my stations’ surroundings in different light and creatively use the brief period of time before my train’s arrival. this project has transformed my relationship to the physical space that was rarely appreciated before (least of all for its inspirational potential), and i wanted to share my experience through these compositions with you.
