United States Collegiate Fencing Squad Championships

Did you know the US won 6 Olympic medals at the 2008 games held in Beijing?  They won more medals in the last Olympics  than they’ve ever won in history.  Did you also know that New York City is the top fencing center in the US?  I had a chance to see some future Olympians at the United States...

Tribeca Treats

W L. posted an article on - Nov 7, 2010, 9:00 am
The quest for the perfect cupcake sent me on another trip.  This time I went down to Tribeca Treats to try another contender.  I was expecting a cupcake that fits into the   normal mode of a moist cake topped off with some creamy frosting.  Well, their cupcake is not your typical cupcake, at le...

Red Egg

I love dim sum but I don’t necessarily like waiting around for your number to get called or sharing a table with a family of six.  If you’re in the mood for some dim sum without all the hassles, head over to Red Egg which is just off the main grid in Chinatown.  It’s so hassle free, you can ...

They don’t build them like this anymore.  Built in 1878, the church is a National Historic Landmark and a must see for everyone visiting New York.  You’ll be stunned by the sheer size and architectural beauty of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.   They have services many times throughout the day t...

DBGB Kitchen & Bar

W L. posted an article on - Sep 15, 2010, 9:18 pm
Daniel Boulud’s restaurants are usually upscale and uptown but DBGB Kitchen and Bar is a welcomed departure from his normal formula.  I’m not sure why he decided to go downtown, perhaps it was the economy or maybe the new direction of more casual french dining that Anthony Bourdain referred to ...

Buttercup Bake Shop

W L. posted an article on - Sep 12, 2010, 7:26 pm
I haven’t had a cupcake in a few weeks and needed a quick fix.  I was in midtown and the appropriately named Buttercup Bake Shop was nearby.  Their cupcakes are on the smaller side of some of the other shops with a few less flavors.  But bigger and more variety doesn’t always mean better so I...

Qi

The first time I ate at Qi was unplanned with very low expectations.  I was hungry and it was the first decent looking restaurant in the area that I walked past.  I’m not sure if it was my hunger or my low expectations but my first time there was surprisingly good.  Qi describes its cuisine as ...

Navy Beach

Controlled chaos is the best way I can describe Navy Beach.  That’s what you get when you combine live music, a hot crowd and good food right off the beach.  I got there a little early when it was still sane which was a little before six o’clock.  The host took down my name and ask me to chec...

Chinatown Wide Open

The Nikon 50mm f/1.8D is an amazing lens.  Selling at most places for about $120 it’s a bargain for such a fast and sharp lens.  It’s also small and weights just 5.5 ounces so you can toss it into your coat pocket and take it with you just in case you need something that has a 1.8 aperture. I...

Any visit to the the Hamptons should include a delicious lobster roll.  I’ve had my share of lobster rolls ranging from so-so to pretty good.  I haven’t had a great one until I stopped by Brewsters. Brewsters Seafood Market is basically a fish market with some tables inside and a few picnic t...

Kum Gang San

Twenty four hours a day, in the heart of Korea town, Kum Gang San churns out Korean food that even Koreans from Korea like.  I’m pretty sure they’re not drawn by the faux rock wall or the cheesy white piano but by the consistently good fare coming out of the kitchen.  This is one of my favorit...

Cupcakes are great and the only thing better than a cupcake is a really big cupcake.  I found some really big ones at Crumbs Bake Shop in Midtown.  Midtown isn’t the only place to get them, in fact they have many shops all over the city and even in East Hampton.  They have a huge variety of...
