  • Liverpool Art and Culture Jan. 25, 2008
The Times rated this as the best British Art Blog back in 2005. This year Liverpool is the Capital of European Culture and this blog is now reporting everything that is going on in Liverpool in 2008. It's a 'must read' for those visiting the city and wanting to know what's going one. Regularly updated and good visuals and LOADS of details.

  • Lines and Colors Jan. 11, 2008
One of my favourite art blogs. Charley Parker is always thorough in his reviews of artists and illustrators. This blog is probably of most interest to comic illustrators, however there's lots to interest others who enjoy art history. Charley produces profiles of artists I've never heard of on a regular basis. This blog educates and stimulates.

  • A Painting a Day Jan. 11, 2008
This is the original painting a day blog. Duane Keiser invented the painting a day blog and has had extensive press coverage as a result - plus his work regularly achieves impressive prices at auction. I characterise his blog as "the original and the best". Duane is an innovator, started doing web videos before anybody else and now now does extended studio webcam events of his painting. I can't wait to see what he does next. He now does very slightly less than a painting a day - but it's arrives with regularity in my inbox.

  • Postcard from Provence Jan. 23, 2008
Julian Merrow Smith has been producing a small daily postcard sized oil painting in or near his home in Provence for over three years - during which time the New York Times discovered him and the rest, as they say, is history. Postcard from Provence is an incredibly popular 'painting a day' blog and, along with Duane Keiser's blog, is one of the original and the best daily painting blogs. There is lots of competition for one of Julian's postcard sized paintings sold via his on-site auctions. Julian says a bit more now than he used to, but like Duane Keiser, who stimulated the creation of this blog the emphasis is very much on the painting rather than the words. He now blogs virtually every day rather than absolutely every day. I'd love to see some videos of Julian painting.

Cindy has a wonderful drawing style. Her blog focuses on her great line drawings of her world as she sees it rather than lots of chat. Her sketchbook drawings from her trips are always a delight.

  • Have Dogs, Will Travel Feb. 11, 2008
This is a charming blog with a devoted following. Robyn is an Australian who writes about life and her painting studies and excursions from her new home in Tuscany. She and her husband have two dogs (hence the title of the blog) who also make guest appearances from time to time. One of them, Dermot, is an Old English Sheepdog who has a blog of his own and makes rude remarks about my cat!

  • Carol Marine's Painting a Day Feb. 11, 2008
Carol Marine has a very popular painting a day blog. She has maintained her output for a long time now, long after others fell by the wayside! Her paintings are fresh and simple and yet are always good to look at - a visual treat. The blog also offers insight into art life in terms of her periodic workshops and gallery exhibitions

  • Fur In The Paint Jan. 11, 2008
Gayle Mason writes about being an animal artist - drawing cats and dogs amongst a crowd of rough collies (and a husband and two sons!). Her work involves coloured pencils, graphite and acrylic. Gayle is constantly experimenting and is extremely generous in sharing her experiments with new art materials - which are much valued by coloured pencil artists. She is an innovator when it comes to trying out new surfaces and new ways of producing her art.

  • Works by Tracy Helgeson Jan. 23, 2008
Tracy writes exceptionally well about being an artist, the process of making art and the challenges of meeting exhibition deadlines and combining a career as an artist with being a wife and mother. She also produces great oil paintings which are very popular.

  • A Painting Today Feb. 13, 2008
A very popular painting blog by a very popular art blogger. Karin's paintings are very accomplished and you can spend a long time looking at them. Every so often she writes about trips out of town and workshop trips and about the process of producing work for an exhibition. In addition, she periodically shares information about how she works and posts useful and informative videos.

  • Gurney Journey Jan. 23, 2008
James Gurney is a world class illustrator (see Dinotopia) who writes about illustration and his own work. He's also a very generous blogger and shares a wealth of really useful information for artists and illustrators on his blog. He writes succinctly and uses really helpful images to illustrate points made. Essential reading! Lots and lots to bookmark!

  • Woolgathering Jan. 11, 2008
Elizabeth's blog has small and sometimes apparently idiosyncratic drawings - but they are always an absolute delight to look at. She is also a long-time and consistent blogger. Her strapline of "looking thinking drawing being" is spot on.

  • Sketch Travel Feb. 11, 2008
An unusual blog as it's about a project to get a sketchbook - by hand - around the globe to 50 different artists and illustrators. Each completes a page and then it is handed to the next person. The blog provides a periodic commentary about its progress and the contributors.

  • Watercolour Artist Diary Jan. 11, 2008
Tracy Hall is an absolutely superb watercolourist, an amazing animal artist and a hugely talented miniaturist who paints nature in detail. She combined these talents to win The Royal Miniature Society Gold Memorial Bowl this year (2008). That's the top prize at the oldest miniature art society in the world. Tracy also paints for charitable purposes and natural history illustrations. Her series of works about birds is particularly interesting. If you want to see somebody consistently producing top quality animal and nature art and read the blog of somebody who is also generous about sharing and giving then read this blog. I've been one of Tracy's #1 fans since I first found it. I am genuinely in awe of her talents and skills.

  • Laurelines Apr. 21, 2008
Laurelines is 'one of the originals' for me as it was one of the very first blogs I followed when I started blogging. I was completely entranced as Laura posted everyday with a new sketch or painting - all done in series. I was amazed at both the talent and the dedication. Laurelines is always strong on excellent images and succinct commentary. Her watercolour sketches are excellent. Her travels add a big bonus for those of us who've never been to some of the places she gets to. Laura also shares a lot of very useful information about the materials she uses. Laurelines has a huge following and each post gets a lot of comments. Laura doesn't post quite as often as she used to - due to other projects she's now working on - which is my only reason for not giving her a 10.

  • Nicole Caulfield Art Journal Feb. 12, 2008
Nicole Caulfield is a very fine award-winning artist and teacher. On her blog she is very generous in sharing her tips about art materials she uses and the techniques and approaches she employs in making art. You'll also some great art which is rooted in realism - and every now and again a video pops up! She's also a Mum of two lively girls - which means her blog takes a break from time to time. Even though she's a friend of mine, as per my general rule when rating blogs, that's the only reason that she's not getting a higher rating.

  • The Cycling Artist Feb. 11, 2008
An excellent blog for those wanting to be professional artists. "The Cycling Artist" contains the art and art-making of Tina Mammoser and a whole lot more. Tina is really generous in sharing information about business practices, software, art materials, studio practices, art fairs etc etc - all the things she's involved in doing and using as a professional artist. She also does regular podcasts which you can also access via her blog, I'm only giving her a 9.5 to give her an incentive to provide me with a good reason to revise my review. I know she'll rise to the challenge!

  • Adebanji-Alade Jul. 28, 2008
I'm very taken with Adebanji Alade's blog - which demonstrates the value of drawing from life whenever it's possible. He draws people all the time - and it has a pay off. His painting was shown in the annual exhibition of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters last year.
