
Back in the day the grandfather of this experiment was known as a "Depression Garden". Chunks of coal were kept in a planter with some water. When salt was dumped on the coal, crystals formed. With a little imagination and some artificial coloring (
laundry bluing for blue "flowers," mercurochrome for pink "flowers"), you could grow a beautiful crystal garden.
