School lunches have come a long way since the federal government tried to cut costs in the 1980s by classifying ketchup as a vegetable.
Nevertheless, I mostly bypassed buying school lunches over the years for my kids, who preferred brown-bag stuff fixed at home. Although school food has been improving, I remained suspicious of menus that still tilted too often toward canned vegetables and corn dogs.
