This girl on Jeopardy! is studying Mandarin, French, and Spanish. Alex asked her which was hardest, guessing Mandarin.
She said Mandarin is harder to speak, but "French is harder to write". Sure, French spelling is wacky, but I'm guessing she hasn't started on hanzi (the characters) yet.
